For parents who want to breastfeed but are struggling, lactation consultants are essential in assisting parents with achieving their breastfeeding goals. An international board-certified lactation consultant (or IBCLC) evaluates parents for simple to complex issues that may compromise breastfeeding. Parents can self-refer or be referred by their obstetrician, pediatrician, or family physician to see a lactation consultant. During the appointment, the lactation consultant will review the parent’s concerns and the medical history of the parent and baby. This medical review also includes any issues during the pregnancy and complications during or after the delivery. The parent and the baby will have focused physical exams. Then, the lactation consultant will correct the issues that are contributing to the parent’s concerns. If imaging (i.e. ultrasound), labs, medications, bodywork, or tongue-tie release is needed, the parent and the infant will be referred to a breastfeeding physician, pediatric otolaryngologist, pediatric dentist, or physical therapist as appropriate.
At Doolapods, our lactation expert is also an IBCLC, pediatrician, a breastfeeding physician, and a mother that has breastfed two children. Dr. Sharifa Glass has the medical knowledge and personal knowledge to help you in reaching your breastfeeding or chestfeeding goals. She is available to diagnose and treat all breastfeeding concerns.
